A momentous event occurred at Groote Schuur Hospital which captured the imagination of the world. On 3 December 1967, the world's first human heart transplant was performed.
This remarkable feat, achieved by a dedicated and gifted team led by Professor Christiaan Barnard, placed South Africa's name indelibly in the annals of medical history and catapulted Professor Barnard to international fame, making him one of the most famous cardiac surgeons of our time.
Professor Barnard, with the appropriate training, the background in research and the necessary skills to perform the operation, also had the courage to face the medical, ethical and legal risks associated with human heart transplantation.
The first heart transplant could not have been achieved without the skill and support of many other disciplines including Cardiologists, Radiologists and Anaesthetists.
As a result of this event, international attention was focused on Groote Schuur Hospital, broadcasting to the world the expertise and excellence of their staff, which continues to this day.
